FLY FISHING IN ITALY VALTELLINA - DISCOVERING ITALIAN ALPS
Valtellina makes the perfect destination for lovers of sports fishing thanks to its three main rivers Adda, Mera and Spool, its 110 alpine lakes, 220 mountain streams and 24 reservoirs making it Italy’s most important drainage basin, second only to the entire Valle d’Aosta.
With just one permit you can access 1250 km of fishable waters, 74 km reserved for flyfishing and fishing with artificial lures. There are also areas for impatient anglers and areas set aside for youngsters.
From Chiavenna to Livigno, Valtellina offers stunningly beautiful landscapes steeped in history.
You can spend entire days in this valley’s marvellous environment, getting to know the local territory and its culture with visits to castles and stately homes, World War One tracks and trenches and local museums. You’ll relish the age-old flavours of the area’s renowned cuisine and its outstanding wines and you can visit the historic vineyards where they’re still produced. You might also decide to take time off from fishing and relax in the various hot springs and spas dotted throughout the area.
Near to Lake Como, on the border between Valtellina and Valchiavenna is Colico, a lakeside town overlooking Lake Como; here you can go for boat trips and visit the quaint lakeside villages and if you can’t survive without a spot of shopping, Como is not far away and easy to reach.
Also nearby and easy to reach is Milan, Italy’s fashion capital for shopping addicts
From Chiavenna, it’s also easy to reach the renowned town of St. Moritz where in winter you can watch “White Turf,” the spectacular horse racing on snow event

Valtellina is Italy’s second most important drainage basin; the primary element is water which flows pure and pristine and makes the landscape all around exceedingly lush.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO CATCH IN VALTELLINA
The focus of fishing in Valtellina is primarily grayling (a fish which favours clear rivers and streams, with well-oxygenated water) and brown trout, followed by arctic char and marble trout. The latter can grow quite large and is a variety which only lives in the Italian and Slovenian subalpine river basins flowing into the Adriatic.
